ERIC ABELE

Professor - Designer - Painter

I'm a trained, professional costume designer for theatre who believes that art education within the context of theatre design needs an overhaul.  My mission, through my own work and that of my students, is to de-stigmatize image-making and increase students' confidence in their visual communication skills.

My research investigates the crossover of art and theatre design education, primarily through digital costume design pedagogy.  The aim of this pedagogy is to teach learners how to incorporate more realistic representations of pattern, body, and texture within a sketch while increasing speed and strengthening communication.

In partnership with my fellow researcher, Professor Lauren Roark of the University of Tennessee Knoxville, I co-own Digital Theatre Design, LLC; together we host and produce Design with Procreate: an online learning community teaching rendering skills to students and professionals of all experience levels.
